Saya barusan dipinjemi laptop IBM Thinkpad T40. Tapi sayang, batereinya bermasalah. Walaupun sudah dicharge 100% (terlihat dari tulisan di indikator baterei), ternyata sewaktu chargernya dilepas, waktu yang tersisa pada kondisi itu (100%) cuman 20-an menit. Dan bener, kalau kita pake nyetel lagu, memang laptop akan mati setelah sekitar 20 menitan.

I just got an IBM Thinkpad T40 laptop. But, the battery is in problem. Even after 100% charged (see it in battery indicator), the life time is only about 20 minutes. Try it by playing some MP3 songs, and really, its turn off just some times around 20 minutes.

Coba-coba googling, akhirnya nemu beberapa artikel yang membahas masalah baterei laptop thinkpad, walaupun bukan dari seri T40. Salah satu saran yang menurut beberapa orang ternyata memang berhasil setelah dicoba adalah dengan cara dikosongkan secara total, lalu dicharge, dan mungkin perlu dilakukan beberapa kali, sebab pada umumnya yang bermasalah adalah controller di dalam baterei, bukan si baterei itu sendiri.

Googling … and I found some articles mentioning about thinkpad battery problem, although it is not T40. One of alternative solution which is agreed by some other people is to do a full discharge and recharge again. It may need to be done more than once. The main problem usually is the battery controller, not the battery itself.

Kebetulan, masalah saya memang controller baterei, bukan si baterei, karena kalau kita memaksa si baterei untuk tetap bekerja walaupun indikator sudah menunjukkan 0%, laptop masih bisa bertahan sekitar 40 menit lagi. Supaya laptop masih bisa bekerja padahal indikator sudah 0%, kita perlu menon-aktifkan alarm baterei di Windows, atau menutup pin-pin yang ada di tengah baterei, sehingga controller yang ada di baterei tidak bisa berkomunikasi dengan laptop.

Fortunately, my problem is look like the battery controller. I can say that because when I push the battery to work even after the indicator show 0%, the laptop is still able to play songs for around 40 minutes ! To do that experiment, we have to disable the Windows’ critical battery alarm, or isolate the middle pins in the battery hardware with some piece of paper, to prevent the controller from communicating with the laptop.

Akhirnya, saya putuskan untuk menggunakan metoda discharge-charge beberapa kali. Dan hasilnya? Alhamdulillah, baterei nampak lebih sehat. Dulu, sebelum menggunakan solusi itu, data full charge capacity hanya 4700mWh, padahal data design capacity menunjukkan angka 47000mWh (tinggal 10%). Sekarang, setelah beberapa kali melakukan proses discharge-charge, full charge capacity bisa naik menjadi 16000mWh, dan life-time yang ditunjukkan pada indikator 100% sekitar 1 jam lebih. Saya akan coba lagi untuk melakukan proses discharge-charge, siapa tahu bisa naik lagi mendekati angka design awal.

Finally, I decide to run that discarge-charge method. And the result? Thank’s God, my battery looks more healthy than before. In the day one when I receive the laptop, the full charge capacity report (using IBM battery Info tools) is 4700mWh. And the design capacity is? 47000mWh. Yes, it only remain 10%. And now, after discharge and charge it for three or four times, the full charge capacity is 16000mWh, and the life-time is more than 1 hour. I will try to do some more discharge and charge, and hope it can increase the full charge capacity value and its real life time.
