Canon S5ISSebenarnya sudah lama saya suka motret, tapi motret yang “agak serius” baru bisa dilakoni setelah beli kamera digital Canon S5IS (itu pun baru “agak serius” lho ya, belum beneran “serius” pindah ke DSLR :p). Nah, ada satu hal cukup menarik yang bisa kita lakukan dengan kamera Canon yang berbau-bau oprek-mengoprek. Silakan googling “CHDK Canon”, atau langsung click kesini, akan tertulis banyak mengenai sebuah hasil oprekan di kamera digital Canon yang memanfaatkan ’sebuah celah’ yang ditemukan di firmware asli Canon.

My other hobby is photography. Not too serious, just as serious as Canon Prosummer S5IS class, still not joint the DSLR club. There is an interesting hacking stuff related to Canon digital camera. If we are googling with “CHDK Canon” keyword, or just clik this site, there is enough information about hacking Canon’s camera through “some exploits” found in the original firmware.

Konsep yang digunakan oleh CHDK bisa dibilang aman, tidak mengubah firmware, dan tidak merusak/menghilangkan garansi. Ada dua metode yang dikenal, yaitu menggunakan file khusus yang di-copy-kan ke SD card, dan satu lagi, juga meng-copy file, tetapi dengan HARUS mengunci (lock) SD card tersebut. Untuk kamera S5IS yang saya punya, metode yang bisa digunakan adalah metode kedua (CHDK baru akan aktif kalau file tertentu kita copy ke SD, dan SD-nya kita lock).

I personally say that CHDK concept is quite save, no firmware modification, and no warranty damage. There are two methods, one is using a special file stored in the SD card, and the other is copy a specific file and running camera with a LOCKED SD card inside. For Canon S5IS which I have, the only working method is the second one, CHDK will be activated only if we copy the needed file and the SD is locked before inserted in the camera.

File yang digunakan untuk menjalankan CHDK di kamera tidak terlalu besar, paling hanya 200KB. Dengan adanya CHDK di kamera, ada beberapa tambahan fitur yang tadinya tidak ada, seperti : kemampuan menyimpan hasil foto dalam bentuk file RAW atau setingan Av sampe 65 detik (very slow speed). Di beberapa jenis kamera Canon lain, ada beberapa fitur tambahan : video setting, ISO overwrite, motion detection, dan sebagainya. Sayang, beberapa fitur tersebut belum ada yang ‘menejermahkan’-nya ke firmware Canon S5IS.

CHDK file(s) is not big, it’s only about 200KB. With CHDK “installed” in camera, there are some additional feature, such as : RAW format support for photo file, Av setting as slow as 65 seconds. There also some features which is possible to add in some other camera model (but unfortunately, there is still nobody successfully port this features to S5IS model), such as : more video setting, ISO overwrite, motion detection, and some others.

Sebenarnya pengen juga ikutan sumbang saran di forum CHDK untuk S5IS, tapi belum ada banyak waktu luang, padahal kalau udah mulai hacking firmware, tau sendiri lah … harus punya ketekunan extra plus waktu senggang yang juga extra. Njelimet (karena harus baca assembler line satu per-satu), tapi mengasyikkan, apalagi kalo udah nemu yang dicari-cari.

It is true that I really like to contribute something in this S5IS CHDK forum, but unfortunatelly, I still have no time to start digging the firmware. I did download it from internet, disasm it, fast reading it, but still do nothing. Firmware hacking is a complexe things to do, but it will become a really fun, especially when we found a/some usefull things from those thousands assembler line code.

So, kali ini saya cuman mengulas sedikit kelebihan CHDK saja, belum ikutan nyumbang sesuatu yang cukup berharga buat komunitas. Bagi temen-temen pemakai kamera digital CANON, sama sekali nggak rugi kalo nyoba’ “install” CHDK di SD card-nya. Toh, sama sekali tidak merubah apa pun di jeroan kamera, jadi tidak perlu kuatir mengenai masalah garansi (kalo memang masih ada). Bener-bener seperti “add-on” …

So, this time I just write this blog, not yet contribute something usefull to the community. For you who own a Canon digital camera, I really suggest you install CHDK to your SD card. Nothing inside your camera will be affected, no hardware modification needed, so no need to worry about warranty. It just like an “add-on”.
